Is Drinking Wine Screwed?

Only 27% of young people in UK own a corkscrew!

Once the staple of every kitchen draw and picnic basket, according to a report examined by Zoe Wood in the Guardian today, this is the sorry case of the vanishing corkscrew. (Though in our household they used to go missing as I forgot where they were!)

The prevalence of screw-top bottles and abstinence among young people blamed for falling popularity of gadget. Which means my husband is very clearly middle aged as he does battle with the cork and corkscrew every night. I often hear the words “It’s corked, again!” as he dashes out the door to get another bottle just as supper is ready.

And as we live a 25-minute round trip from the nearest supermarket this is a little irritating. I have pointed out that he could open the wine earlier so this could be avoided, to no avail!

I by contrast loved the screw top despite my background in winemaking as it was so easy to sneak a sweet little bottle in the middle of the day without any one knowing!

“Once an essential piece of kit in every kitchen but, like the corks that gave it a reason to exist, tastemakers are announcing the “death of the corkscrew” after it lost the battle with screw-tops and younger consumers who do not know how to use one.
